The Story of Léon, Edouard Manet’s Secret Son @AFMO Online Lectures

This lecture hosted by Chris Boïcos focuses on Edouard Manet’s secret son: Léon Koelin-Leenhoff was born on 29 January 1852. His mother was the young Manet’s piano teacher, Suzanne Leenhoff. Only in his painting did Manet symbolically acknowledge the existence of a son born outside wedlock. In the sequence of works we will analyze, we will see how the guilty father’s affection is expressed repeatedly in portrayals of Leo from childhood to young manhood.

Every month, on the third Saturday, Christophe and Anne-Catherine take turn and host a conference, followed by a short Q&A session. The conference will be recorded live, and available online for one month.

Starts at 5:00pm (CET) / 11:00am (ET) - available on replay for one month
