Spring 2024 Day Trips

Le Havre & Saint Adresse and Rouen & Jumieges

In June 2024, AFMO hosted two day trips to Normandy as part of AFMO’s Impressionist season.

On June 13, AFMO patrons explored Le Havre’s rich history, artistic heritage, and stunning coastal scenery. The trip began with a visit to Église Saint-Joseph, a World Heritage site and symbol of Le Havre’s post-war reconstruction and architectural innovation, as well as Auguste Perret’s show apartment. In the afternoon, AFMO patrons followed in the footsteps of the Impressionists. They visited the Musée d’Art Moderne André Malraux (MuMA) for the special exhibition Photographier en Normandie (1840-1890). Un dialogue pionnier entre les arts led by curator Dominique Rouet. The trip concluded with a stroll along Sainte-Adresse, known as “Bout du Monde.”

The following day, a special day trip to Rouen began with an exploration of l’Abbaye de Jumièges, nicknamed “the most beautiful ruin in France.” As part of the Normandy Impressionist 2024 Festival, Laurent Grasso transformed the monument into a metaphysical labyrinth. Guided by the artist himself, the group had an immersive experience of his exhibitionCloud Theory in the romantic ruins. The trip continued in Rouen with a guided visit by Delphine Crocq, director of the Rouen tourist office, and Lisa Concato, to the rarely-opened Monet’s studio and the Rouen Cathedral. This was followed by a viewing at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen (MBA Rouen) with curator Florence Calame Levant, showcasing the exhibitions Whistler, the Butterfly Effect and David Hockney Normandism.

Special Thanks to Dominique Rouet and Catherine Bertrand from Musée d’Art Moderne André Malraux (MuMA); Eric Baudet and Lise Legendre from Office de Tourisme de l'Agglomération Havraise;  Delphine Crocq and Lisa Concato from Office de tourisme métropolitain de Rouen, and Florence Calame Levant from Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen (MBA).
