Continuing its exploration of Scandinavian painting, the Musée d'Orsay is presenting a retrospective in spring 2025 devoted to the Norwegian painter Christian Krohg, very popular in the Nordic countries and almost unknown in France.
Through an in-depth overview of his artistic career, the exhibition highlights his links with the political and social struggles of his time. It reveals a humanist painter, seeking to awaken the viewer's awareness of certain moral and social issues – poverty, famine, public hygiene and the condition of women. The exhibition also explores Krohg's relationship to the art of his time, particularly during his stays in Paris, and his search for immediacy that places his work at the crossroads of modernity, between naturalism and impressionism.
