Harriet Backer began her formal art studies in her home country of Norway, however it was after moving to Munich and Paris that her talent truly flourished. Throughout her time in the French capital, she drew inspiration from the Impressionists’, particularly in regards to the attention they paid to light.
The Musée d’Orsay’s retrospective of Backer’s work—the first to take place in France—explores her contributions to the Norwegian art scene and its connection to the Parisian avant-garde.
