SOPHIE CALLE and her guest Jean-Paul Demoule THE GHOSTS OF ORSAY

Mar 15, 2022 - Jun 12, 2022

The exhibition features a body of work about Sophie Calle’s time living in the disaffected Hotel d’Orsay in 1978, years before the station and hotel were turned into a museum. During this period, she took pictures, invited friends, and collected many documents and objects. To this day, she has kept these items, like so many ghosts of a world that no longer exists. Confronting the hotel and the museum, Les Fantômes d’Orsay displays these objects and photographs of artworks from the museum’s collections taken by the artist during the lockdown. From photography to poetry, ready-made to composition, the show reveals Sophie Calle’s unique ability to create narratives, somewhere between the personal and the larger story.

Exhibition curated by the artist, in collaboration with Donatien Grau, advisor to the Presidency of the Musée d’Orsay and the Musée de l’Orangerie for contemporary programs.

Exhibition made with the support of American Friends Musée d’Orsay (AFMO)
