Pastels From Millet to Redon

Mar 14, 2023 - Jul 2, 2023

The spring 2023 exhibition Pastels From Millet to Redon at Musée d’Orsay is supported by American Friends Musées d’Orsay et de l’Orangerie.

Pastel is a unique medium that offers infinite possibilities of gradations; it perfectly translates silky and vaporous textures, as well as the transience of light or the vitality of a portrait, thanks to the brightness and strength, and purity of its pigments.

The Musée d’Orsay unveils 95 pastels by 50 artists drawn from its collection of nearly 500 works. The exhibition includes 8 major themes highlighting the renewal of pastels from the second half of the 19th century. From portraits to Symbolist chimeras, through landscapes and social transformations, the exhibition brings together the greatest artists of their time:  Eugène Boudin, Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, Jean-François Millet, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Piet Mondrian, Odilon Redon, and many more.

AFMO is also supporting the edition of the English language Pastels album, the first of a new series of books to be published by Musée d’Orsay.
